The Sydney Youth Stamp Group (SYSG) was formed in 1990 by experienced stamp collectors who wanted to share their knowledge of philately with young people. This initiative was strongly supported by the Philatelic Association of NSW Ltd. (Philas).

In the early years, we visited schools with stamp clubs. Later, we found it more effective to invite children to workshops at the Philas premises in Brisbane Street, Sydney. After the building was sold in 2023, our workshops moved to Willoughby Library, where they are held during school holidays.

Expanding from a workshop-focused site to a comprehensive learning hub for young stamp collectors, both online and in person.

Our website was originally designed to provide workshop details and booking information. Now, we are transforming it into a resource for young collectors, beginners, and those looking to start a youth stamp club. Over time, this site will grow to include educational content, postal history from around the world, stamp collecting terms, tools, and guidance on starting a collection.

Workshops

Our free workshops, designed for children aged 7 to 17, are usually held at Willoughby Library during school holidays.
Each workshop has a theme, with activities built around it. Sessions may include stamp swapping, writing up stamp pages, games, presentations, prizes, and a goodie bag containing around 12 collectable philatelic items.

Other Activities

Beyond workshops, SYSG organises children’s activities, programmes, and competitions at stamp fairs and exhibitions. We can also arrange similar activities for schools and community groups, all free of charge.

How Do We Offer Everything for Free?

We do not sell anything or fundraise. Instead, we rely entirely on donations:

• Our helpers generously volunteer their time
• Philas provides financial support for resources.
• Stamps and philatelic items are donated by individual collectors, businesses, Australia Post, and stamp dealers.
